Slim Fast - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Slim•Fast is a brand of shakes, bars, snacks, packaged meals, and other dietary supplement foods sold in the U. As the Slim-Fast diet itself was a convenience diet and it offered none of its own dinner products. [7] Optima was the flagship brand and eventually replaced "original recipe" shakes. [8] Optima was available in the same forms as the original products, including meal bars, shakes, snack bars and powder. In late 2009, Slim-Fast simplified its product line with the "3-2-1" diet plan. The plan emphasized three 100- calorie snacks, two 200-calorie meal replacements (shakes or meal bars) and one dinner. Meal Replacements are 200 calories and are meant to be used in place of shakes as the "2" in the 3-2-1 plan like the shakes. Meal bars are supplemented with vitamins and minerals as much as the shakes. Snack Bars are 100-calories and meant to be the "3" in the 3-2-1 plan, as a dieter can have 3 a day. In a sense, the 3-2-1 is similar to the original plan ("two shakes and a sensible dinner") with the addition of three small snacks in between. more...

Best Meal Replacement Shakes - UK - Team Boom

Meal replacement shakes are increasingly popular in the United Kingdom. This year it was announced that for the first time, meal replacement shakes are one of the items included in the Chancellor’s “basket of items” that is used to calculate the cost of living in the UK! There are many types of meal replacement shakes on the market in the UK. In some circumstances, a meal replacement shake called Fortisip is available on the NHS, making it one of the most popular meal replacement shakes consumed in the UK, both by people who want to lose excess weight, and people who need to build up their weight. I feel that I might get bored of the flavours eventually, and it is not possible to make other things using Fortisip. Recently rebranded “Cambridge Weight Plan”, consultants of this direct selling company offer clients a range of ready made carton drinks, and sachets of powder in various flavours to which milk is added to make the shake. Their most popular products are the small ready made cartons of shake, called Tetras, which come in three flavours – strawberry silk, chocolate velvet, and banana bliss. I tried all the Tetra flavours, and found that they all had a sharp sweet taste, and a mineral aftertaste which was stronger than the aftertaste from Fortisip. This meal replacement shake is different because unlike Cambridge Diet and Fortisip, their shake mix comes in one bag of shake mix in sweet cream flavour. The flavour mix-ins that are included are Belgian Chocolate, and Strawberry. This also makes it the cheapest out of the meal replacement shakes I tested. Best Weight Loss Shakes

Best Weight Loss Shakes. Eating moderate portions of whole, unprocessed foods and following a solid exercise plan are the optimal way to lose weight. Weight-loss shakes support such a plan when you don't have time to prepare or eat a full meal. The best weight-loss shakes fill you up and include a solid balance of the nutrients you should get in any meal. The shakes ideally contain minimal sugar and supplements and are derived from whole foods. The best weight-loss shakes fit into this plan when they contain 250 to 400 calories - enough to fill you up and give you energy, but not so much to push you over your daily calorie goal. The best weight-loss shakes replace higher-calorie meals or snacks. A properly crafted shake helps you trim calories and still get the nutrients you need. Replacing too many meals daily with a weight-loss shake, though, limits your nutrient intake and may lead to weight loss that's too quick so you lose valuable muscle in addition to some fat. Weight-Loss Shakes to Avoid. Pre-purchased weight-loss shakes often contain more sugar than you need or are loaded with artificial sweeteners, which have questionable effects on weight loss. Shakes are usually only part of these extreme weight-loss programs; you're usually encouraged to eat other specific packaged meal-replacement foods, such as soups, stew, chili, oatmeal and scrambled eggs. The rise of the protein drinks for ordinary

The rise of the protein drinks for ordinary people. The "sport-related" protein product sector is booming. The classic protein drinks have usually been characterised by displays of over-sized bottles and tubs, often with labels depicting rippling torsos. Similar lifestyle protein products can be seen in the US on the shelves of the likes of Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Walgreens, and CVS. The ubiquity of protein. People in the West usually already get more than enough protein. The CDC says "most adults in the United States get more than enough protein to meet their needs". In the US, UK and most of the rest of the West people have diets that easily supply enough protein. There are those who advocate higher protein ratios in diets, arguing that the mainstream nutritional advice is outdated and that active people might need considerably more. So what is behind the appearance of the ever-expanding range of protein supplements? "You could buy chicken breasts the day before work and make a packed lunch, but [a protein shake] is easy, quick and cheaper. Selling protein in the UK. They benefit from the general aura of healthiness that hovers over the word "protein". If protein is so healthy, and I want a snack, one that will fill me up, I might very well be drawn to something with protein written on the packet. Is Slim - Fast any great shakes? - Daily Mail Online

The Slim-Fast method of losing weight is to replace two meals a day with milk shakes, and then to eat a healthy, low fat meal at night. Two Slim-Fasts a day and an evening meal should provide 1,200 calories, say the makers. Milk protein: Slim-Fast says one serving provides the same amount of protein as two eggs. Gum arabic (E 414): Thickener which slows down sugar crystallisation, to ensure the drink is smooth, and emulsifier which stops the drink separating into layers of water and oil. Sodium ascorbate: Needed for the body to produce collagen, necessary for muscles, skin, bones and cartilage. British Nutrition Foundation scientist Sara Stanner says the shakes - powdered and canned - are nutritionally sound. 'They do contain all the necessary vitamins and minerals in reasonable amounts for one meal,' she says. 'If you are doing lots of exercise you may find this provides too few calories, and you might want to add low-fat snacks to bridge the gap. But 1,200 calories a day is fine if you are overweight and moderately active. 'Slim-Fast contains soya fibre, which is good, and I would encourage a low-fat, high-fibre meal in the evening, with plenty of fruit and vegetables. Once they stop, people often go back to their old bad habits and the weight goes on again.' more...

Best Diet Shakes? - Parenting advice and

Well since my little girl was born I've been trying to lose weight I'm so rubbish at sticking to a diet for any length of time so the weight keeps creeping back on again. I want to try a shake diet for a couple of weeks just to drop some pounds and get my motivation up again but I don't know which to do. I was going to try Slimfast but I'd rather do one that I just add water to because that would be easier when I'm out and about. With slimfast I was really strict and followed the instructions (ie the two shakes and a dinner of 600 though I would aim for less) with Tesco I sometimes substituted the shakes for meals of the same calorie value, I mainly used them to start me off to get me used to eating less and for when I was out. I bought the tesco ones over the slimfast initially based on price and was pleasantly suprised that I actually liked them as much. I also tried the asda ones and they were disgusting! I would def advise against going down the powder and water route. They taste horrible, quite bitty and are a pain to make cos you need to measure the powder and the water and you'll need a large cup with a lid to mix it up in. A friend told me about Jason Vale and the juice plan. That's just with replacing two meals a day with the juices and having a healthy meal in the evening(nothing heavy or stodgy). The juices taste great and I don't feel hungry. They contain all the nutrients you need too, so you don't feel worn out like you would on a diet. I then got pregnant so stopped doing the diet but will start it again once I have little man. more...

High protein diet not as bad for you as smoking

The warning was raised in a press release about a large study which found that for people aged 50-65, eating a lot of protein was associated with an increased risk of dying. However, the study, which assessed the diets of Americans in a single 24-hour period (rather than long-term), found in those aged over 65 that a high protein diet was actually associated with a reduced risk of death from any cause or from cancer. In this study, on average people ate 51% of their calories in the form of carbohydrates, 33% as fat and 16% as protein (11% animal protein). The headlines suggesting a high protein diet is “as harmful as smoking” was not a specific finding of the study and could be seen as unnecessary fear-mongering. This is particularly of note given that the effects of a high protein diet were found to differ dramatically by age. This study looked at the relationship between the amount of protein consumed and subsequent risk of death among middle aged and older adults. The researchers had data on protein consumption for 6,381 US adults aged 50 and over (average age 65). Each person’s level of protein consumption was calculated as the proportion of calories consumed from protein. The researchers looked at whether proportion of calories consumed from protein was related to risk of death overall, or from specific causes. The researchers also looked at whether the relationship differed in people aged 50-65 years, and older individuals, and whether it was influenced by fat, carbohydrate or animal protein intake. The researchers found that results for death from any cause and from cancer seemed to vary with age. However, the opposite effect of high protein intake was seen among those aged over 65. The researchers concluded that low protein intake during middle age followed by moderate to high protein consumption in older adults may optimise health and longevity. Although the study was reasonably large, numbers in some comparisons were relatively low, for example, there were not many diabetes-related deaths and only 437 people overall ate a low protein diet. While the authors suggested that people eat a low protein diet in middle age and switch to a high protein diet once they get older, it is not possible to say from the study whether this is what the older participants actually did, as their diets were only assessed once. more...

Best Diets of 2014 - Women's Health Magazine

How it works: Similar to the regular Atkins diet, this one is also low-carb—but it doesn't eliminate carbs entirely, and it's way more plant-based. Most people on this plan are vegan, but some still eat fish, lean white meat, and dairy products. Why people like it: It's much better for your heart than the traditional Atkins diet since you're not eating tons of cholesterol. That said, it's harder than some other diets to maintain because it's more restrictive (you're not supposed to have any red meat or "bad" carbs like white bread and pastries). The theory is that cooking food kills most of the vitamins in it, so by eating it raw, you're taking in more nutrients. Most people who follow this diet are vegan, but some eat raw animal products, like raw fish, cheese made from raw milk, and certain kids of raw meat. You typically end up losing weight—research suggests that people who follow this plan end up eating fewer calories overall since there are so many things they can't eat and you have to plan out pretty much everything you put in your moth (i.e., it's harder to randomly grab a snack without thinking about it). Why people like it: It's trendy, for one thing, and also, proponents say they feel fresher and more of-the-earth when they eat raw. It was developed by Barbara Rolls, a nutrition professor at Penn State University, and it's based on the assumption that people tend to eat the same amount of food each day, regardless of how many calories are in said food. Why people like it: You don't feel like you're starving yourself because you're still eating the same amount of food as you were when you weren't on the plan. more...
